My brother-in-law is into RC car drifting, and a big part of that is of course to have a cool-looking car! He used a LED light kit, but the front lights were not that great. Very blueish and the intensity of the LEDs varied quite a bit.

So I replaced the LEDs and installed some fog lights, it ended up quite decent looking I think 🙂

Original front LEDs, not great
New front LEDs, with additional fog lights

I used white 5mm LEDs, pretty bright ones; 25.000 mcd. The color seem quite natural, not too warm and not too cold. Replacing the existing LEDs were very easy, just take out the old ones and insert the new. There was no need for resistors, as the LED light kit already supplied the correct voltage.

Installing new front LEDs

For the fog lights I drilled holes in the chassis and mounted two clear low-profile LED lens, which ended up looking very nice.

New LEDs mounted

I didn’t do any modifications to the rear lights, they were just fine as they were.

Original rear LEDs, no work needed — they look fine

Here are the parts I used:

  • 6 × LED 5mm clear, White, 3.1V, 20mA, 25.000mcd, 15°
  • 2 × LED lens 5mm, CLB 300 low, Clear
  • 0.2 m Wire, stranded, 2-cores, PVC, 0.33mm2 (22 AWG), Red/Black
